A Timeline for Teen Drivers - Part I
In our previous article, we discussed some alarming statistics regarding teen drivers and their insurance. In this article, we want to provide a timeline and checklist for parents of teens who are about to start driving. The conversation with your children should start long before they are planning on getting their license.
12 Months Prior To Driving
Set the example. As a parent, you need to model safe driving behavior. Children learn from watching their parents, so make sure you are demonstrating the habits you want your teen to develop. Distracted driving is dangerous for all drivers, regardless of age. Talk to your teen about the hazards of dangerous driving practices, including:
- Speeding
- Tailgating
- Drowsy driving
- Driving under the influence
- Eating while driving
- Texting while driving
- Talking on the phone while driving
Use this time to start having regular conversations about driving safety and responsibility. Make it an ongoing dialogue rather than a one-time lecture.
6 Months In Advance
Six months before your teen gets their license, start discussing the practical aspects of driving. Consider the following topics:
- How often will your teen be driving on a daily basis?
- Will they have their own vehicle, and if so, who pays for the costs of ownership such as gas, maintenance, and insurance?
- What are the rules about cell phone use while driving?
- What are the rules about passengers in the vehicle?
- What are the restrictions on nighttime driving?
- What are the rules about driving in inclement weather?
You may also want to look into teen driver monitoring apps that can help you track your teen’s driving habits, including speeding and other unsafe behaviors.
In our next article, we will continue with the 4 month and 3 month timelines, as well as what to expect on Road Test Day.
