Help Stop Distracted Driving
It is so easy to be distracted while driving, but it is just as easy to set up some rules to follow any time you get behind the wheel of your vehicle. We get so busy in life that many of us never take the time to educate ourselves or the members of our households about safe driving practices.
Distracted driving is dangerous and a common thing you probably witness every time you get behind the wheel of your vehicle. Anything that diverts attention from driving presents a risk. It is time that we all change the social norms around distracted driving.
Texting
Texting and driving are a disastrous combination. Most people think they are only taking their eyes off the road for a second. A second is all it takes to lose focus and not be able to react to what is happening on the road. Other Distractions
Texting is not the only distraction drivers face. Here are other common distractions:
- Dialing or using your smartphone
- Eating or drinking
- Talking to passengers
- Grooming
- Reading
- Programming a GPS or navigation system
- Adjusting a radio or MP3 player
Safety Recommendations
Here are some things you can implement to help keep you and your family safe:
- Smartphone: Store your phone in the back seat or trunk of your vehicle. If you must use your phone, use voice commands only.
- Eating or drinking: Only eat or drink when your vehicle is stopped and parked safely.
- Passengers: Let your passengers know that your priority is their safety and the safety of others on the road. Ask them to help minimize distractions.
- Grooming: Prepare your appearance at home before you leave, not while driving.
- Reading: Never read while driving. It can wait until you reach your destination.
- GPS: Program your GPS or navigation system before you start driving.
- Music: Use steering wheel controls or let your passenger adjust the radio or music player.
Remember, nothing is that important that it is worth risking your life or the lives of others. Stay focused on the road and help stop distracted driving.
