Water Damage Leading Cause of Loss

Water damage is the leading cause of loss for most homeowners. During winter, freezing temperatures can cause pipes to freeze, expand, and potentially burst, leading to significant water damage in your home.

Here are some prevention tips from Nationwide Private Clients to help protect your home:

  • Inspect exposed pipes in vulnerable areas such as attics, crawl spaces, and garages, and install insulation
  • Seal air leaks around pipes to prevent cold air from reaching them
  • Hire a thermographer to identify insulation gaps in your home
  • Turn off water supply during winter travel
  • Install automatic shut-off valves to detect leaks and stop water flow
  • Add emergency generators to maintain power during outages
  • Maintain thermostat settings at a minimum of 60°F
  • Run water faucets slowly to keep water flowing through pipes
  • Open cabinet doors to allow heat to reach pipes under sinks
  • Disable outdoor water fixtures and disconnect garden hoses

If a Pipe Bursts

  • Turn off the water main immediately
  • Contact a water mitigation company
  • Avoid using open flames when thawing frozen pipes
